When in Atlanta, shopSCAD
Aug 31, 2007 | Home Decorating
I’m about to make a trip to Atlanta, Ga., next week — my first! — and some shopping of the home kind is definitely in order (I’m not just talking about IKEA, though it’s definitely on the agenda). One of my first stops will be to shopSCAD. The Savannah College of Art and Design opened the boutique and gallery for their Atlanta campus last year, and — if their website is any indication — the shop promises to be three levels of lovely art and design.
ShopSCAD is fed by works exclusively from the students, faculty, staff and alumni of the college. A quick glance at the “for the home” section yields rugs, pillows, furniture and dishware in a medley of design styles. But what I love most is the story behind each piece, and the obvious care taken to create it.
Some of my favorites:

The Mecedora Rocker ($1,700) by Danielle Peña is made of stainless steel tubing (bent by hand) with a woven cotton rope seat and backrest.

Each ceramic Red Poppies Dancing in the Field Primitive Bowl ($57) by 2002 valedictorian alumna Tiffani Taylor is gorgeous and made to order.

Alumna Jenny Little’s 360-thread count sateen Ships with Lace Pillowcases ($50) are what dreams are made of.
